Brief Description of WCST
The Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania (WCST) is a non-governmental and non-profit making, membership civil Society Organization: established in 1988 with the aim of conserving
National Activities
Since its founding over twenty years ago WCST has been involved in a wide array of conservation activities at the Local and National levels. These include environmental education and recreational activities such as bird walks; forest conservation in places such as the Eastern Arch and coastal forests; conservation policy including a prominent role in advocating for the original international ban on ivory trade in 1989; and conservation of important bird habitats in Tanzania.
Mission and Objectives
The Society’s mission is to conserve Tanzania’s wildlife and the environment for the benefit of mankind. To attain the mission, the Society works towards addressing the following specific objectives:-
· Promote sustainable and equitable use of natural resources
· Carry out environmental conservation education/awareness within Tanzania so as to stimulate interest and promote wise use and enjoyment of nature.
· Provide technical support and other information to the Government and others
· Assist in reviewing and formulating wildlife and natural resource conservation policies
· Identify research priority and assist research projects
· Liaise with similar conservation organizations within and elsewhere in the world with a view of harmonizing the approaches used in conservation of Wildlife.
· Engage in Fundraising to implement the Society’s conservation projects
Society Vision
Wildlife (Biodiversity) and the general environment of Tanzania as our natural heritage for sustainable development are conserved.
MEMBERSHIP
WCST is a membership Society where people share ownership and responsibility in Leadership, Advocacy, Networking, and implementation of several Projects. It offers a forum for members to deliberate on issues pertaining to environmental Conservation.
